The 1958 Whirlwind Deluxe

History of Whirlwind Boats
The Whirlwind line of outboard runabouts, produced by Molded Products, Inc. of Cockeysville, Maryland, gained prominence in the late 1950s for its innovative design and family-friendly features. The 1958 lineup introduced two standout models—the 16′ and 18′ Deluxe runabouts—which debuted at winter boat shows and were tested in the challenging waters of Chesapeake Bay to ensure top performance in all inland conditions. These boats were designed by Wingo-Abramo and emphasized stability, safety, and dry riding comfort, making them ideal for family use.
The Whirlwind brand became known for its molded mahogany plywood hulls, crafted in one piece for strength and minimal maintenance. The product line expanded to include 17 models, ranging from the compact 12′ Fisherman to the spacious 18′ Deluxe, each tailored for fishing, cruising, or recreational fun.
Specifications & Features
The 18′ Whirlwind Deluxe and its sibling, the 1640 and 1840 Deluxe models, were built with a 75-inch beam for increased planing surface and load capacity. They featured a 33-inch depth amidships for smoother rides in rough waters and a 20-inch reinforced transom capable of supporting twin engines or single motors up to 75 hp. These boats were equipped with foam flotation, upholstered seats with foam rubber cushions, and mahogany-framed windshields.
Additional standard features included:
- Stowable canvas tops and side curtains
- Deluxe chrome deck hardware
- Forward deck hatch with under-deck shelf for anchor storage and ventilation
- Flared mahogany coaming around the gunwales for enhanced freeboard and dry ride
Despite these upgrades, the 1958 models-maintained pricing comparable to previous years, offering exceptional value for customers.
